The FOQNR fully endorse our Chair Councillor Keith Linnecor in he's attempts to get the Clean up your dog,s mess campaign going in the area.
The Friends of the Queslett Nature Reserve welcome dogs on the Queslett Nature Reserve as long as they are kept under control.
But we do ask dog owners to bag their dogs mess and either put it in a bin or take it home.
We would also like to thank the many responsible dog owners who already do this and lead the way by their actions.

One of the things which is of concern to the Friends of the Queslett Nature Reserve and the Council Parks department is well intentioned users of the QNR will sometimes introduce none native plants to the reserve.
It is the Police of the Reserve to where possible only to plant native species. (Plants by and large which are natural to this country or in some cases have been here for over 250 years.
Many none native species of plants can cause a lot of problems to native species and are better not being in the reserve.
If in doubt before planting anything in the reserve please check with the Parks department or the FOQNR.

TRAINING TO WORK ON THE RESERVE

Despite it being bitterly cold and trying to snow yesterday (sat) a brave hearty bunch of the Friends of the Queslett Nature Reserve took part in a training session on the reserve with a senior Parks Ranger (James). The session included pruning in safety and tree maintenance work.
It was an interesting session and the Ranger in charge gave an excellent display in the correct method of pruning and an interesting talk on tree maintenance. He also went through basic pruning tool use and safety before testing those present.
WITH REGARDS TO SAFETY SOME OF THE KEY MESSAGES WERE ALWAYS ENSURE YOU WORK SAFELY, REMEMBER TO BE CAREFUL OF THOSE AROUND YOU AND TREAT ANY TOOLS YOU USE WITH RESPECT.
We all found it very worth while despite the cold. Thanks also to Kharlid Mahmood MP for popping along to the start of the session.
The FOQNR hope to hold more such sessions hopefully in better weather conditions latter in the year.

Vice Chair Bob Wild and FQNR Secretary Brenda are busy again filling in forms left right and Centre applying for funding to help improve the Queslett Nature Reserve. Apart from the Oscott Ward Committee there is very little support forth coming in these hard pressed times.
The time consuming bureaucracy involved just has to be seen to believed.

FOQNR LINKS WITH CRIME PREVENTION GROUP

Brian Brooks in he's joint role as senior NPI Coordinator and member of the FOQNR helps keeps the Police informed of problems in the reserve.

The FOQNR are closely linked with volunteer Community Crime prevention Groups, and in Particular with the Oscott Neighbourhood Police Initiative.
Working with groups like the NPI helps ensure that problems like anti social behavior which may occasionally happen in the reserve get report to the Police and Ranger Services. The NPI has a member on the FOQNR committee to help cement and promote this link.
The NPI like the FOQNR actively promotes the idea that members of the public can help prevent problems on the reserve by being the eyes and ears of the authorities and reporting any acts of anti social behavior or vandalism.

The reserve is a large one and the Police and Rangers can not be everywhere and on there all the time, the more of using it and keeping a eye on it the better.

Its more than just a reserve

As members of the Friends of the Queslett Nature Reserve will be aware the FOQNR is not just about the reserve. We also look after the Aldridge Road Recreation Ground for example.
The FOQNR also takes an interest in other Environmental issues in the Oscott area.
For example some of use take part in small grot spot litter picks across the Oscott Ward as part of Councillor Keith Linnecor,s (the Chair of the FQNR) Grot squad team.
There are only limited things we can do as volunteers but I like to think it all helps.

Reserve swan recieving treatment.

Sadly one of the reserves swans has had to be taken away to be treated for an injury. Hopefully after treatment it will be in a fit enough condition to be released back into the reserve.

The Local Parks manager has had a report from a member of public that he saw men in a blue Renault van parked on Booths Lane. They were also seen on the Queslett Nature Reserve with 4 fighting dogs setting snares?
If you are in the vicinity of the reserve and see anything suspicious please inform the Police.
Lets stop these thugs in their tracks and protect the reserves wildlife.

Doubt about upgrade to Aldridge Road Recreation ground.

The promised upgrading of the Aldridge Road Recreation ground are now under threat.
The improvements to the main path, the Shady lane gates and the Ranwick grove entrance have all been put in doubt while the council reconsiders their promises.

Litter pick and light pruning session February 4th on the reserve

There will be a light prunning /litter picking session on the Queslett Nature Reserve on Saturday February 4th at 11.30am. The meeting place will be the Ashworth Road entrance.

We would ask members not to park near the Ashworth Road entrance.
Children under an adults supervision are welcome.
Please come dressed appropriate for the weather. If there is heavy rain the session may be cancelled.
Please take care when working on the reserve, treat any tools used with care and with the safety of your self and others in mind.
If you are unsure about the use of any tools or any work being undertakenplease inform a group leader.
Please remember not to disturb any of the reserves wildlife and users of the reserve.

IMPROVEMENTS TO THE ALDRIDGE ROAD RECREATION GROUND

The Aldridge Road Recreation Ground is to have new gates fitted to its Shady Lane entrance. Other improvements to the site will be an extra barriers at the Randwick Grove entrance (This is to help stop motor bikes using this entrance which can be very dangerous) and the path between Shady Lane and Randwick Grove is to be upgraded. (re Tar maced*) .
*This is itended to help those using the recreation ground in particular disabled users in wheel chairs or mothers with push chairs and so on, to cross it without having to face the hazard of ruts and large puddles.
It is good to see the Councils Leisure Services department are funding improvements to some of the open spaces in the Oscott area as well as other areas in the city. The FOQNR have been campaigning for this for some time.
This funding is not new but part of their existing city wide strategic infrastructure allowance used to keep our open spaces in good condition.
The FOQNR which incorporates the Aldridge Road Recreation ground will be battling to get even more of the Cities Leisure Services resources spent in the area as there are many other things which need to be done and it is time we had our fair share of any funding available.

I LOVE THE SWANS IN THE RESERVE

I can not get on the reserve as much as I would like to but I must say how much better it looks these days.
The paths are much better and the main path from Ashworth Road to the ASDA Old Horns is much better since Councillor Linnecor had it improved some years ago.
On the down side however is the drought over the last year has reduced the level of the lake. Lets hope all the rain we are now having will help top it up.
The thing that always stands out for me is seeing those beautiful swans on the lake which i love to see.
But I do wish the vandals would stop throwing the life belts into the lake.
I love the reserve and thank all those who look after it very much.

The Queslett Nature Reserve is a special place where you can go for a walk and enjoy watching the local wild life and this is how the Friends of the Queslett Nature Reserve want it to stay.
We do not want to have building put up in it, Tar mac paths laid all over it, or public events taking part in it.
We want to keep it tidy, well managed and for the use of not only its human users but more importantly for its wild life.

Although the weather has not been to bad this year it is still the time to feed our wild birds, either in your garden or the at the Queslett Nature Reserve.
If you are going to feed the birds in the reserve please avoid giving them white bread and if you put out nuts in a mesh bag please remove it when it is empty.

Meal worms go down well with bird like robins and apples are enjoyed by birds like the black bird.
Wild bird seed is another favourite.
It is always best to feed birds in the morning.

HOW TO IMPROVE THE RESERVE

Sometime last week I received your notification re 'poor state of sections of the fencing' and that monies may become available to improve said fencing. I do voluntary work at the RSPB Sandwell Valley and we know how much time and effort is spent either repairing or painting fences. If a fence is not required pull it down, they do nothing for wild life unless it is a hedge. As a frequent visitor to the nature reserve I feel that any money that becomes available should be spent on making the reserve more wild life friendly. I applaud the way the grass is now only cut along path routes thus allowing the majority of wild plant life to grow and encourage other wild life such as butterflies etc. The one big blot on the landscape is the lake. The lack of water over the summer period has highlighted this. Not knowing much about reserve management but I would suggest that some of the trees bordering and encroaching the lake should be cut down along one side at the minimum. This would leave some nice sandy banks to encourage different types of sand flies and bees. Also, the top corner (nearest Asda) could have the trees removed and have reeds planted instead. Reeds are a great habitat for different types of bird. It would also be of benefit for the birds to have an island, either a permanent one or a tern raft. These are ideal for nesting sites.
Remember a nature reserve should be primary for the wild life and not for people.

(The idea of extending and improving reed beds at the edge of the lake has already been put forward but this is a timely reminder to chase up this issue with the parks department. Sadly although some community volunteers built a raft island for the reserves lake it was rejected by the Council due to health and safety grounds?)

PATHS THAT LINK RESERVES CUT BACK

Following complaints by a number of residents in the Bowman and Caddick area I have managed to get the Leisure Services department to cut back the path at the end of Caddick road.This path at the edge of the carriage way helps maintain the link (by foot) between Turnbury park and the Perry Beeches at one end and the Queslett Road Nature Reserve and Booths Lane at the other.I am still negotiating however to get a few bushes cut back.

BE THE " EYES AND EARS" OF THE RESERVE

Brian Brookes who is the Senior coordinator for the (Oscott) Neighbourhood Police Initiative as well as an active member of the FOQNR, has asked me to remind users of the Queslett Nature Reserve, to be the " eyes and ears of the reserve"
If you see any acts of antisocial behavior and so on, please report it to the Police or Parks department.
The Police do patrol the reserve but can not be there all the time. As many of us who walk on the reserve, carry mobile phones it is easy to report any anti social behavior we see.
However do not put your self in any sort of danger in the unlikely circumstances you see any problems.

Following another litter sucessful pick session at the reserve on Saturday where over 20 black bags were filled with rubbish, I have to say the Queslett Nature Reserve is looking cleaner than ever.It is however a great shame that because of the recent drought the lake has receded that much that you can see all sorts of rubbish in it. This sadly can not be dealt with due to the mud around the lake at the moment.

I would like to request that those who use the reserve please take your rubbish home and I would like to than all those who work so hard to keep the reserve tidy.

BEWARE OF MUD NEAR RESERVE LAKE

As many of those who use the Queslett Nature Reserve may know, the water lake in the reserve is very low. This has meant there is now mud bans surrounding the lake. On Saturday a member of the public while trying to retrieve something from the lake sank past he's knees in the lake and only managed to get out with the help of people passing by.Much of the land where the Queslett Nature Reserve now is was a sand quarry and has been refilled with all sorts of soil and ruble. Following the recent drought conditions land which was below the water line is now exposed but is saturated. I have called on the Parks department to have signs warning people about the mud put up, but in the mean time children and owners with pets should ensure they are not tempted onto the mud near the lake as it may not be safe.

Dear Members.

The Friends of Queslett Nature Reserve will be holding an autumn litter picking and clear up session at the Queslett Nature Reserve on Saturday October 1st.
For all those members along with their family and friends who would like to make their contribution to helping the environment, the meeting will start at the Ashworth Road entrance at 11.30. The F.O.Q.N.R gladly encourages children to these clean ups session but in the interests of health and safety all children must be kept under strict adult supervision, Could we also remind our members and visitors to respect the residents living in Ashworth Road so if possible to park in Booths Lane to avoid congestion at the reserve entrance. We are looking forward to a good turn out on this date to help clean up this beautiful reserve but we must remind those who attend that the weather can be very unpredictable, so please make sure that the appropriate clothing and footwear are worn on the day.
Finally, The Friends of Queslett Nature Reserve has to adhere to a tight budget and it would be a big saving in postage if those members who have an email address could they please forward these on. Thank you

OUR SWANS

As the secretary to The Friends of Queslett Nature Reserve I very often visit this beautiful wildlife haven. I was especially delighted to see that the reserves residental swans have now had three gorgeous cygnets! I sometimes take the swans and their young family corn which I leave on the bank. Because however much I would like to see them up close and however much I would like them to feed from my hand,I am mindful of the fact that these are wild animals,they have their place and I have mine. There is no real need to feed the swans or the other wildfowl this time of the year as there is certainly enough food and it isn`t a good idea to feed them bread. I am concerned that when I am over the Queslett Nature Reserve that I have come across other members of public feeding and actively encouraging the swans to come close. These people think that they are being kind gaining the swans trust. But they don`t seem to understand that there other types of
people who through their own warped sence of enjoyment will use the swans trust of humans to hurt them. So for those who do care, it is really best not to encouraged the swans to come close to the waters edge or to feed from a hand.

The Friends of Queslett Nature Reserve
Update June 2011
It has been a busy year and with results to show. We have carried out several on site activities, litter picking, cleaning up of bulk rubbish fly tipped over many years and path clearance. The reserve had taken on a distinct improvement.
Consideration is now being given to the creation of a new pathway with steps looping off from the main Ashworth Road to Asda path, circling close to the Queslett Road. We are conscious that only limited access to this section should be made possible in order not to disturb existing wildlife and deter the settlement of new wildlife. The bird boxes installed here over the previous two years with the exception of one or two have remained in tact and have been nested by various variety of birds, owls and bats.
Following early successful clean ups in the lake area we have concentrated lately on this part of the reserve and the are to the rear of the solicitors offices that has recently been opened up and made available as part of the reserve.
In addition to the wildlife monitoring and training sessions, we have involved various youth groups that have included youth club members e.g. late evening bat watch and cadets assisting with clean up operations. We have worked with and have a good cooperative relationship with the Birmingham City Council Leisure Services and in particular the Ranger service. In May 2011, though them, we received much practical assistance from a group of 50 employees of Orange Telecommunications using this as a team building exercise.
Our group is now expanding its operations to two other sites, Aldridge Road Recreation Ground and Perry Beeches Nature Reserve on the Oscott side of the M6 motorway.
The grant of 300 Pounds from the Community Chest has enabled us to add to our inventory of equipment and tools. In addition, it has covered some of our running costs and has enabled, through publicity leaflets and newsletters to increase our membership and the interest of local residents. This membership is still free and we hope will stay free. Certainly our efforts have raised the profile of the Nature Reserve locally as a pleasant oasis in a built up area.
Unfortunately, our applications for National Lottery funding for more ambitious projects have so far been unsuccessful. We continue to source more funding from various agencies and by fund raising. We hope again that this year we can be considered for another grant from the Community Chest.

UPDATE ON RESERVE DOG ATTACK

A 19-year-old man, from Kingstanding, has been arrested in connection with the frightening incident at Queslett Nature Reserve, Great Barr, in January after an investigation by the Oscott neighbourhood policing unit. Officers are still looking for a another man, who was allegedly involved in the attack, In the Queslett nature Reserve The victim was walking dog when two out-of-control bull terrier-type dogs attacked the pair. The man a local resident suffered a bite to his hand which required hospital treatment; he also had scratches to his head and chest. The mans dog was also vey badly hurt and required a series of life-saving operations costing over a thousand pounds in vet’s bills. The alleged owner of the one of the dogs who made the attack has been bailed. If you have any information about this incident please contact the Police on 0345 5000 111

REPORT ON MARCH 12TH ACTIVITY DAY

On March the 12th there was another successful FQNR Clean up activity day.
FQNR were joined by a number of young Army cadets and dozens of black bags were filled with rubbish. A lot of larger objects which had found their way onto the reserve were also removed.
The FQNR would appeal to any observing fly tipping on or near the reserve to report it.

MORE BIN PROVISION FOR THE RESERVE

FQNR Chair Councillor Keith Linnecor ensuring the bin out side the reserve is being emptied regularly.

Following a number of appeals an extra litter bin has been placed in the Queslett nature reserve and it has been agreed that the bin near the Ashworth Road will be emptied more regularly. It is now up to dog owners to clear up their dogs mess and use the bins provided. Lets all keep our reserve clean.

BOOTHS LANE FENCE REPLACED

Thank to the fantastic efforts of our Chair Councillor Keith Linnecor the Council have now replaced the stolen fence at the Boundary of Booths Lane. This should help prevent motor bikes and Quad bikes using the site disturbing the wild life and endagering those who use the reserve.

LIGHT PRUNING AND LITTER PICK SESSION MARCH 12TH

There will be a light pruning / litter pick session on Saturday 12th March at the Queslett Nature Reserve.

Members and supporters will be meeting at 11.30 am at the Ashworth Road entrance (we ask those coming along not to park to close to the entrance and would advise you park in Booths Lane.)

Pruning work will be under the instruction of a parks Ranger but please take great care at all times . Tools will be provided.
I would recommend you bring along gardening gloves and also be prepared for the weather.

There will be litter picking for those who would prefer to do that. We can supply litter pickers but if you have your own please bring them along.

UPDATE ON DOG ATTACK IN RESERVE

The owners of the dogs which attacked a reserve user and his dog a few weeks ago have still not been caught. We not aware of any new sightings of them or their dogs on the reserve but if you have any information about what happened please contact the Police.

The owners of the dogs which attacked were both young white men one with light ginger hair? are believed to use the surrounding area regularly. The FOQNR would ask anyone with information to contact the police on 0345 113 5000.There was apparently no attempt by the dog owners to stop the attack. Please take care when using the reserve, these sort of attacks must be stopped and owners made to be responsible for their dogs.

It has been a trying time recently for those who appreciate the Queslett Nature Reserve. We have heard about the vicious attack on a user of the reserves dog by other dogs allowed to get out of control and we have also sadly had some of the reserves wooden fencing stolen.
The Police do patrol the reserve but it is a large reserve and they can not be there all the time.
With this in mind we ask FQNR members to be the eyes and ears of the reserve.

While you should never put your self into any form of risk situation and have no additional authority you can help by reporting anything suspicious you may see taking place on the reserve (or the Aldridge Recreation Ground) to the Police or Council Authorities.

MORE LITTER BINS ARE NEEDED IN THE RESERVE

I think the Queslett Nature Reserve looks so much tidier than it used to do. The paths are much easier to negotiate since the friends of the Queslett Nature Reserve started to help prune them back. This is so important for disabled or elderly users of the reserve.
The one issue i would raise however is the dog mess. While I am pleased to see there are notices reminding dog users of the problem some of them seem oblivious to them. I would certainly like to see more bins provided on the site as i think this may help the situation.
As I say though the friends of the Queslett Nature Reserve are doing a great job.

THIEVES STEEL RESERVES FENCING

Audacious thieves have struck at the Queslett Nature Reserve stealing over one thousand pounds worth of wooden boundary fencing. The fence along the Booths Lane boundary of the reserve was surgically removed late yesterday afternoon or early evening. 7 large wood fence panels of a cross timber nature were stolen.This theft would not have been a easy take. The wooden post were cut through by mechanical means and the wight of these fence section would have been considerable.The Police and Leisure Service department are baffled but doing their best to find the culprits.I believe my self, the fencing was stolen to order and is now probably now on a farm or a similar piece of land.The Police are appealing for witnesses and given the location there are probably a number of people who would have seen this theft happening without realising it. If you have any information please contact the Police.The fence will have to be replaced but finding the funds will not be easy. It took a few years to find the funding last time and I will do my best to get the ball rolling. The fence is needed to stop motor bikes and Quad bikes entering the reserve and putting the reserves users, lives in danger as well as disturbing the wild life. The fence is also a defined boundary for the reserve.I know I can speak for the friends of the Queslett Nature Reserve and many residents when I say the people who stole this are disgusting and need to be caught.

Every year we hear about people walking on frozen lakes (or letting their dogs walk on frozen lakes). This is very dangerous as freezing water can kill even the best swimmers if they fall through the ice on a lake.
The Queslett Nature Reserve has a lake and every time it freezes foot marKs are seen on it. The message from the Birmingham City Council Leisure Services Department and the FQNR is please do not be tempted to walk on this lake when it is frozen

Litter pick up date

The Friends of the Queslett Nature Reserve held another successful litter pick on Saturday. Over 20 black bags of rubbish were removed from the site.
Members also joined with the Police and member of the N.P.I, to ask users of the reserve if they new anything about the resent attack on a dog and its owner in the reserve.

On the down side it has been noticed that some dog owners instead of taking their dogs mess home with them are getting it up with plastic bags and throwing the mess in the bags into near by bushes. The bags obviously do not bio degrade so this habit is making the situation worse. Dog owner please clean up after your dogs and take it away with you.

The FQNR are calling on the Council to provide more litter bins in the area.

DOG AND OWNER ATTACKED BY DOGS IN RESERVE.

There has been a vicious attack on a dog and its owner while they were in the Queslett Nature Reserve recently.The dogs in question, one a white English bull terrier type and the other a multi coloured Bull or pit terrier, severely bit a dog and its owner as they were walking in the reserve.
This has resulted in the owner having to pay over one thousand pounds in vet bills and his dog is still in agony.

The owners of the dogs which attacked were both young white men one with light ginger hair? are believed to use the surrounding area regularly. The FOQNR would ask anyone with information to contact the police on 0345 113 5000.
There was apparently no attempt by the dog owners to stop the attack. Please take care when using the reserve, these sort of attacks must be stopped and owners made to be responsible for their dogs.
The Police are continuing to investigate this attack and they are also taking statements.
There may have been a less severe but similar incident a few weeks ago on the Beeches estate?.
Similar youths and dogs have been seen near the chip shop on the Beeches Estate so they may be local.
The owner of the attacked dog who was also bitten him self, does not wish to be named as is very distressed about his dog. Please help spot these dogs and report them to the Police.

NATURE RESERVE CLEAN UP 29TH JANUARY

There will be a litter pick taking place at the Queslett Nature Reserve on Saturday 29th January.
Those who are interested in helping the wild life in the reserve and the environment should meet up at the Ashworth Road Entrance. (please do not park too close to the entrance and respect local residents parking). We would suggest you consider parking in Booths Lane and walk to the Ashworth entrance.
We will be meeting at 11.45am; please come prepared to roll your sleeves up and get dirty. We are looking to clean up any build up of litter following the festive season.
Children are welcome but must be under the supervision of an adult at all times.

NO EXCUSE FOR FLY TIPPING

There has been an ongoing problem of fly tipping in Booths Lane. But it is thanks to the diligence of the Friends of the Queslett Nature Reserve and the local Environmental team we have been able to reduce this anti social behavior.

It has also saddened me that some antisocial residents have took advantage of the recent Industrial dispute and bad weather recently to dump rubbish in the area.
If any one sees rubbish being dumped in the reserve or near by they should report it. Please try and make note of any registrations or descriptions.
Those of us who love to visit the reserve and enjoy its wild life need to be observant and not to hesitate to report such act of anti social behavior.

BOOTHS LANE DEVELOPMENT MEETING

Cameron Homes are looking to by the land off Booths lane next to the Queslett nature Reserve.
They are holding a meeting tomorrow (8th December) at the Queslett Golf Course booths lane. The meeting will take place between 12,30pm and 7pm.
Plans will be on display and their will be a chance to speak to the developers.
The FQNR will be attending and ensuring the best results for the reserve we can get.

FEED THE BIRDS

Now that the winter has arrived early you may wish to feed the birds in the Queslett Nature Reserve..
That is fine the birds do need help to survive the winter, but please remember some importatnt things. Do not feed the birds in the late afternoon of after dusk. The birds will not eat at this time and left over food will encourage rats.The best time to feed the birds is early in the morning and please do not leave to much food. Feeding birds regularly is better than to leave a glut of food for them.Do not leave food on foot paths. Nuts in bags placed in trees is fine however there is also a chance that the squirrels will get there first and please remove the bags when you notice they are empty.
What foods should you provide?High energy foods, various nuts and seeds are best. Soaked bread (white or brown) – dry bread swells in the stomach. Leftovers, e.g. cake, cooked rice etc. are fine, but no spicy or salty foods, or "gone off" foods. Apples, cut in half and put the ground are excellent for blackbirds and robins.
(Please note white bread is not the best food for our birds but they can eat it see above)

You can also contact the RSPB for advice and don't forget to feed the birds in your garden to.
Please enjoy feeding the birds and remember to take care if you use the reserve in bad weather.

FROZEN LAKES ARE DANGEROUS

Every year despite warnings people foolishly venture out onto open water when it iced over. It is the same with the lake in the Queslett Nature Reserve. Even some grown up adults feel the need to "walk on water" and regardless of the danger step out onto the frozen lake without thinking of the potential danger. Lakes like the one in the Queslett Nature Reserve are not meant for swimming in at the best of times and given its remoteness from any help, trying to walk on this lake when it is covered in ice is a dangerous thing to do. Sadly if the worst happened and someone fell through the ice, the cold would probably mean they would not be able to save them selves by swimming and they could get trapped under the ice.The message is simple please do not risk trying to walk on lakes like the one in the Queslett Nature Reserve when they are frozen over. (and do not let your dog do it either)

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL EVENT

There was another successful activity day at the Queslett Nature Reserve on Saturday6th Nov. The weather held out and a lot of pruning back off paths and clearance work was carried out. Members also cut back over hanging branches on the Queslett Road boundary even though the Council should have done this work. Stephan Bodnar the Councils Bio Diversity officer was hand to answer a number of questions about the wild life in the reserve. The Friends of the Queslett Nature Reserve also signed up a number of new members.

On the down side there has been a complaint by one anonymous resident about members of the FQNR parking outside the reserve and making a noise?. I was not aware of any noise ? but I would ask all visitors to the reserve who use the the reserve not to park too close to the Ashworth Road entrance but if possible in Booths Lane and be considerate to the residents who have to park there.
There is also an entrance to the reserve off Old Horns Crescent near the ASDA super store.

We are now hoping weather permitting to hold a litter picking morning before the end of the but we will let member know if we can.year.

FQNR ACTION DAY NOV 6TH

There will be a FQNR action day on Saturday November the 6th. We will meet at the Ashworth Road entrance at 11am. (please do not park too close to the entrance)

DUCKS DISAPEAR FROM NATURE RESERVE

Ducks are disapearing at an alarming rate off the lake in the Queslett Nature Reserve. It is believed that some people are going around catching them for the pot. This is great shame after all the hard work out in by members of the Queslett Nature Reserve to improve conditions for the wild life on the reserve.If you see anything suspicious please ring the Police on 0345 113 5000 and do not put your self in any sort of danger.I have also been informed Swans in Perry Hall Park are having their eggs stolen.

I was delighted to be reelected Chair of the Friends of the Queslett Nature Reserve at their AGM today.
There were some new faces elected onto the committee and I am sure they will do a great job.I would also like to say a big thank you for the effort put in by those committee members who have been replaced.
The Queslett Nature Reserve is an old quarry site which was filled with rubbish and then landscaped. For many years until I and a number of like minded residents got together to form the Friends of the Queslett Nature Reserve, the reserve was neglected by the Council.

LOOKING FOR FUNDING

Vice Chair Bob Wild and FQNR Secretary Brenda have been busy throughout the summer filling in forms left right and Centre applying for funding to help improve the Queslett Nature Reserve.
The time consuming bureaucracy involved just has to be seen to believed.
The FOQNR are still waiting for a reply from most of the organisations approached but the Oscott Ward Committee have agreed £300 from their community chest should be given to the FOQNR and for that we are very grateful as it will help us run on through the summer.

BETTER ACCESS FOR THE DISABLED IS NEEDED

The Queslett Nature Reserve is a lovely place and especially so at this time of year.One of its draw backs at the moment however is it is difficult for some wheel chair users to get through the gates at the Ashworth Road entrance to the reserve.
The current gates were put in as they are to try and put off motor bikes as these are not suitable on the reserve and can be very dangerous to those who visit the reserve.
I am currently working with the Oscott Disability Group and other disabled residents to try and find a solution to this problem. At the moment the current gates are to be modified to allow easier access for wheel chair users. However I am trying to get the Council to do more to help to find funding, in order to have more suitable gates put in, with a hard standing and a disabled drop curb near by.
Although clearly money is very tight at the moment I feel this gate should be changed as it would also help encourage schools with disabled pupils in wheel chairs and give them a better opportunity to visit the site if they so wish. Along with the Friends of the Queslett Nature Reserve I am working to improve access for all to the reserve.

BIRD BOXES BEING USED ON RESERVE

Members of the Friends of the Queslett Nature Reserve along with our resident expert Dr Stephan Bodner paid a visit to view a number of the Bird boxes put up last year on the Queslett Nature Reserve and it has proved they are a success.
Many of these boxes have been located off the beaten track for obvious reasons and this has helped the bird life in the reserve to be able to use them.
Most of the boxes appear to be occupied and and amongst the birds recorded as nesting are Blue tits, Stock doves and Owls.It is hoped as the boxes mature there will be even more species nesting next year.

BEWARE OF FIRE IN THE RESERVE

There is always a danger of fires in the Queslett Nature Reserve and especially so after a week or so of dry weather. With this in mind the FOQNR would remind everyone to take extra care when using the reserve during the summer. Please make sure any discarded cigarettes are stubbed out completely (better still take it away with you). Also picnic fires are not permitted in the reserve.
If you see a grass fire in the reserve please call the Fire brigade ASAP.

DRINKING DEN REMOVED

The FQNR are please to be able to tell you the drinking den in the reserve we reported to the Council a week or two ago hase been completely removed by Council workers. Sadly a number of trees have been damaged but we will try and plant new trees on the reserve to make up for that.

Bird studing success

Over 20 people spent an enjoyable and interesting morning on the Queslett Nature Reserve today and this did not count the 3 users of the reserve who joined the Friends Queslett Nature Reserve today.Activities ranged from bird netting (for identification they were all released unharmed and the work was supervised by an expert) bird observation and litter picking the site.Dr Stephan Bodnar the Councils Bi diversity officer proved yet again what knowledge has when it comes to the world of nature.Dozens of different birds wore identified and identified is hoped the work being undertaken by the FOQR and other groups will make the wild life on and around the reserve even more varied.The FOQNR strongly believe working on the reserve is just part of their aim which is to improve the environment throughout the area.

BIRD STUDING EVENT SATURDAY

This is just a reminder that there will be a bird studying event at the Queslett Nature Reserve on Saturday.
The Birmingham City Council's Bio Diversity expert Stephen Bodnar will be starting early on the Reserve but members and residents are welcome to meet him at 11am at the Ashworth Road entrance.

Please come dressed for the weather and reserve conditions. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. If you come by car please try not to leave it in Ashworth Road or Lindsey Road as there is little parking available. The nearest WC is in the ASDA Store on Queslett Road.

New trees planted in Aldridge Road Recreation Ground.

The Friends of the Queslett Nature Reserve were delighted when our Local MP Khalid Mahmood MP, offered a helping hand to plant some new trees in the Aldridge Road Recreation Ground. Khalid who was on Constituency business near by readily offered to help out when he heard what was going on.
Pauline Cook a local resident and member of the FOQNR said "the whole planting ceremony was excellent and the trees soon went in everyone did very well."
The trees were donated by the Trees for England Group and a lot of hard work was done beforehand by Glendale under the supervision of Local Parks manager Lee Southall.

NEW TREES FOR THE ALDRIDGE ROAD RECREATION GROUND

Tree for life have donated a number of trees to the FOQNR. After a lot of consideration the Activities sub committee decided they should be planted in the Aldridge Road Recreation Ground.
Vice Chair Bob Wild, Council officer and myself met up to look at suitable locations this week.
One of the key considerations is they should not be planted in such away that they will overhang any ones property in the future.
If you would like to come along to the tree planting ceremony it will be taking place on Wednesday at 11am. We will be meeting at the Shady Lane entrance to the Recreation Ground.

HELP SUPPORT THE FOQNR

With Spring approach the FOQNR will be preparing to carry out a number of duties with the Queslett Nature Reserve and the Aldridge Road Recreation Ground. We will need funds to be able to operate as a group and to improve the reserve and recreation ground.
As an organisation we are determined to keep membership free but that does mean we have to look else where for funding.

DRINKING DEN DISCOVERED IN RESERVE

A potentially dangerous construction which could be used as a drugs den has been found in woodland inside the Queslett Nature Reserve. The quick actions of local residents and member of the Friends of the Queslett Nature Reserve, have made sure this structure has partly been broken down. Sadly a number of healthy trees were vandalised by those building this structure.
I have informed the Parks department requesting the rest is removed as soon as possible.The whole structure was in an unstable way and could have fallen on a child who may be playing in the reserve. It is thought that this large shed like structure could have been used by youngster to take drugs or drink alcohol unobserved.I would like to thank all those who alerted me to the situation.

Bird studing event to take place Sat 27th March

There will be a Bird study event at the Queslett Nature Reserve on March 27th. The meeting place will be the Ashworth Road entrance of the reserve. 11am There will be a chance to study with a senior Bio diversity expert, birds seen on the reserve. Anyone wishing to, can also help with a litter picking exercise.
All are welcome. Children must be supervised by an adult.

(please note there are no toilets in the reserve. There is a toilet owned by the ASDA Super store in their shop near by however, on Old Horns Crescent)

City Parks Bio diversity Officer Post to go

I and I am sure most of the members of the Friends of the Queslett Nature Reserve (and many other friends of parks groups) am disgusted that Dr Stephan Bodnar the BCC Bio Diversity officer is going to have to leave his post because of stupid Council reorganisations.
He does a great job helping community groups look after the wild life in this city in our many parks and reserves. The Council should think again.

Iland haven for Quelestt reserve lake

FQNR Chair and Vice Chair Councillor Keith Linnecor and Bob Wild inspecting the Iland as it is being built.

I would like to thank Mike Garvey (Great Barr Leisure Centre Manager) and many of his staff who in their own time are building a wild life island refuge for the lake in the Queslett Nature Reserve.I have to admit when I suggested the island was what the lake needed for its wild life I never thought Mr Garvey and his volunteer group would be able to do as well as they have.The island will float in the middle of the lake in the Quslett Nature Reserve after being weighed down. The Parks department have been very helpful in the guidance they have given and the Friends of the Queslett Nature Reserve have also been very supportive.It is hoped that the new island will be ready to be "launched" in a matter of weeks?

New signs for the Queslett Nature Reserve

At long last new signs which were paid for by the FQNR have been delivered and erected by the Birmingham City Council Parks department. They have been placed near the Old Horns Entrance and the Ashworth Road Entrance.
On the new signs is information about the Queslett nature Reserve its history and wildlife. There is also some information about the FQNR.

With the near Artic conditions we are facing at the moment please give a little thought for the bird life in the area. They will urgently need your help.
Members of the Friends of the Queslett Nature Reserve like Secretary Brenda Wilson are regularly going into the Queslett nature Reserve to put out all sorts of different food for the birds there but much more id needed.
You can do your bit by putting out some scraps for the birds in your own garden. Check out the RSPB Webb site if you would like more information on the subject

DO NOT GO ON THE LAKE IN THE RESERVE IF IT FREEZES OVER

The lake in the Queslett Nature Reserve should be treated with caution at the best of times but in the winter even more so.
The lake is not suitable for swimming in, it is not treated and may have dangerous algae in it. Dogs should not really be encouraged to go in the lake for the same reason.
In the winter when if lake freezes over, it is sometimes tempting to try and stand on it. This can be dangerous even near the edge. One fall and a bad soaking could lead to all sorts of complications. KEEP OFF THE LAKE WHEN IT IS FROZEN.
It is far better and safer to just enjoy looking at the lake and its wild life on the lake from the safety of dry land..

THE WEATHER IS INGNORED AS THE ACTIVITY DAY GOES AHEAD

I would just like to thank all those member who braved the weather and turned up on Saturday to help plant trees, prune bushes and litter pick. You all did a great job.
A number of Oak and Beech trees were planted and with any luck they will live to maturity and help replace many of the trees which are being lost though out the city. The litter in the reserve is now well under control and although more pruning work is needed many of the paths are well pruned back.

TRAINING SESSION TAKES PLACE IN THE RESERVE

FQNR Activity day organisers (and a few members who just happened to be passing, were given an interesting training session on basic tool handing, by Senior Park rangers on Saturday.
Many different tools were looked an and simple tips were given on handing and maintaining them. There were also demonstrations given on basic safety techniques when working on a reserve.
Everyone agreed it was a useful experience.

NO SIGN OF NATURE RESERVE

It was recently pointed out to me that there was no sign telling any one where the Queslett Nature Reserve was. I checked and this is in fact correct. I then contacted the Highways department only to be told we do not do these signs for free and it would cost £300 to have one made and erected. "could the Friends of the Queslett Nature Reserve ( voluntary group) pay for one?"Well what a sorry state of affairs the Council seem to have got them selves. It would appear they can not even afford a information sign, giving directions to one of their own Nature Reserves.
After paying the Birmingham City Council to have a sign about the Queslett nature Reserve made (about 3 years ago) we have been told it may be ready to go in later this year.

FENCING FOR THE ALDRIDGE ROAD RECREATION GROUND.

The FQNR working closely with the Neighbourhood Police initiative and local Councillors were able to secure funding for the erection of more metal palisade fencing for the Aldridge Road Recreation Ground. Part of the Oscott School Lane boundary has now, as a result had fencing put up to help the security of local residents.

TRAINING TO TAKE PLACE

Senior members of the FQNR who regularly help out at activity days on site will be receiving basic tool handling training this Saturday. This is in order for the group to be able to work more independently inside the reserve in future.
The Committee has been in talk with senior Parks managers over the last few months in order for this to take place.

It has been agreed by the committees of our groups that the FQNR and the ODG should endeavour to work closely together to try and insure where possible disabled members (and their supporters) are encouraged to enjoy out door activities. With this in mind it has been decided that the members of the ODG are given joint membership with the FQNR (and vice versa.)
This does not mean these groups are merging as the committee will remain independent of each other, but it is intended that more co-operation will be expected.

It is the aim of this joint venture to encourage
· More disabled people to enjoy activities in the Queslett Nature Reserve.
· Activities such as guided walks (where practical.)
· Improve access to the reserve.
· Encouraging activities such as general gardening type activities such as light pruning/ and planting on the reserve. (As agree by the committee’s: ref parks management)
· To ensure wild life is safe guarded.

A SUCESSFUL SITE MEETING TAKES PLACE

Thanks to our Chairman Councillor Keith Linnecor a site meeting on the Queslett Nature Reserve between senior Parks department officers and members of the FQNR took place yesterday.
We were on site for the whole morning and met up with Councillor Barbara Dring and a passing Police Officer. (yes the Police do patrol the Queslett Nature Reserve regularly).
There was an extensive tour of the site where many issues were raised and future work plans discussed. The officers were very impressed with the work the FQNR had done and gave permission for a number of other tasks to be carried out.
The Officers involved promised to go away and try and solve a number of problems which they were informed about. For example the state of the lake with all the life savings rings thrown in, the need for some large stumps to be removed and the grass cutting regime.
All in all it was a successful site meeting and time well spent.

PLEASE SAY NO TO FOOTBALL PITCHES ON THE RESERVE

I was very disappointed last week to hear at a meeting with the Police I attended an Oscott Councillor say that the Queslett Nature Reserve was not a reserve but an old land fill site where football pitches and a skate boards Centre should be put.
The Friends of the Reserve have for 2 years worked hard to improve this site and more and more different kinds of wild life are slowly appearing on it. It is a rest full place to be in and the thought of having football pitches, changing rooms and skate board centres horrifies me. Just think of the damage it would do to the reserve and the amount of problems regarding antisocial behavior it would bring. I am not anti children and a small kick about area for youngsters would be ok but not football pitches and so on.
There are enough football pitches in the area already surely. Just look at the Aldridge Recreation Ground which is 5 minutes away. Al;so I understand a top class brand new skate Board Centre is to be built on the Oscott side of Perry Barr Park just down the road and close to all the bus routes. No as a resident I do not want football pitches on the reserve.

QUESLETT NATURE RESERVE ACTIVITY DAY

It was really good to see so many young people helping out at last weeks Queslett Nature Reserve Activity day. A number of students came along to help us prune path ways back, get rubbish out of the lake and litter pick.

We also manged to get some log benches put in place.
The Queslett Nature Reserve is slowly with the help of volunteers getting to look more like a Nature Reserve. Lets just hope now e are getting some where no one comes along and tries to ruin the good work the Friends of the Queslett nature Reserve are doing.

NEW FENCING FOR THE ALDRIDGE ROAD RECREATION GROUND

Representatives of the FOQNR met with their Chair (Councillor Keith Linnecor) and officers of the Birmingham Leisure Services Department on site at the Aldridge Road Recreation Ground last week. After viewing the site they helped with the discision where to put new steel fencing on the boundary. This funding will help secure a little more of these field for local residents and has been obtained from the Birmingham city Council.

The Friends of the Queslett Nature Reserve have purchased a new strimmer, bow saws and garden implements to help with their work on the Queslett Nature Reserve. We have also acquired a shed kept on the land of one of our seniors member where this equipment along with other bits and pieces can be kept.

RESCHEDULED LITTER PICK ANNOUNCED

There will now be a litter pick and shrub clearance day on August the 6th at 10am. The meeting place will be the Ashworth Road entrance to the Queslett nature Reserve.

For those whho would like to do something alittle more active, shrub and bush clearing is to be undertaken under the supervision of the Birmingham City Council's Bio Diversity expert Stephan Bodnar. Tools willbe provided.

Please come prepared for the weather (it may be called off again should there be continued heavy rain at the time scheduled.)

LITTER PICK JULY 11TH

The next litter pick of the Queslett Nature Reserve will take place on the 11th July at 11am.
The meeting place will be the Ashgrove entrance. We will supply litter pickers, black bags and gloves.
Many of the reserves users have told us they think the reserve is a lot cleaner and we want to keep it that way. Children are welcome under the supervision of an adult.

NEW LOG BENCHES ORDERED

Given the amount of residents that use the Queslett Nature Reserve it has allways been a sore point that there are no benches in the reserve. There used to be a traditional style bench on the main path in the reserve but as you might expect it was vanadalised to the point of destruction.However a few years ago I aranged for some shaven logs to be placed on the main path in the reserve near the Ashworth Road end. These have proved very durable. Now I have finally got, with the Backinging of the Friends of the Queslett Nature Reserve, the Parks department, to introduce 2 new large logs suitable to be used as benches, in the reserve. One other good thing about these new log / benches is their lack of expense.The logs should be put in place latter in the year.

ALDRIDGE ROAD LITTER PICK A JOB WELL DONE

All those who took part in today litter picking of the Aldridge Road Recreation Ground thought it went well. Brian Brookes one of the leading members said "Given the Council workers who look after the Aldridge Road Recreation Ground site only litter picked it recently, we picked a lot of litter up. We had an old hose pipe and lots of plastic bottles.
I think we have helped make a difference".

At todays very well attended Friends of the Queslett Nature Reserve committee meeting a lot of niggling problems have been ironed out. It is now hoped that between now and the Autumn 3 clean up sessions will take place including a picnic.
It has been agreed that a number of tools and other things needed to carry out work on the reserve will be purchased as will promotional materials.
The FQNR is to continue to work closely with the ORG and the various community groups within it to do as much as possible for the community.
It was decided that the next litter pick would be on the Aldridge Road Recreation Ground.
Khalid Mahmood MP popped in to give his encouragement to the group and said how he admired the amount of work Chair Councillor Keith Linnecor and the rest of the group were doing. "There has certainly been a big improvement of the reserve" and he wished more people would do things rather than talking about them".

F.O.Q.N.R NEWS IN BRIEF APRIL 09

F.O.Q.N.P GOES FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH
At a well attended activity day organised By Councillor Keith Linnecor (Chair FOQNR) and Dr Stephan Bodnar (the Councils Bio Diversity officer) another mountain of rubbish was removed from the Queslett Nature Reserve recently.
A number of bushes and trees were also pruned in order to improve the health of the trees and improve the lake environment.
Amongst those giving a helping hand were member of the Friends of the Queslett Nature Reserve, Army cadets from Barrow Lane, Council officers (in their own time) and Khalid Mamood MP who came to offer his support. Many thanks to all of them.

DEVELOPMENT PLAN.
During a public meeting last year, plans to repair and replace fencing and for planting new trees and shrubs were agreed as part of a development plan. This work will be carried out as funding becomes available over the next few years. There are also plans to involve local schools next year. Lessons in Forestry, wildlife and even some N.V.Q skills may be taught on the Quelett Nature Reserve site.

BIRD AND BAT BOXES.
Thank to the efforts of Doctor Stephen Bodnar and Councillor Keith Linnecor, along with willing volunteers from the FOQNR, over 40 Bird or Bat boxes have been put in place in the Queslett Nature Reserve.

I just want to write and say thank you to Councillor Keith Linnecor the Chair of the Friends of the Queslett Nature Reserve and Dr Stephan Bodnar Birmingham City Councils Bio Diversity officer for all the work they did organising the recent Queslett Nature Reserve Activity day.
I thought it went very well and all those who helped on the day including a number of youngster from the Army cadets did very well. We need more hand on people to help solve problems.

VANDALISM TO OUR TREES MUST STOP

As sure as night follows day and elections follow an avalanche of leaflets, anti social yobs leave a trail of broken newly planted trees in the spring. What amusement some people get from destroying a new trees is beyond me. As I do most year I will bring this issue to the attention of the Police and hope they can catch one of these mindless fools in the act.
If you see anyone trying to damage a tree in the Queslett Nature reserve (or sadly trying to set fire to one) call the park rangers 464 8728 ASAP. If you see some one vandalising a tree on the highway call the Police.
If you want to protect our newly planted trees, should we ever get a Dry spell of weather why not water a new tree if it is is near where you live it may just help it survive?
